The American Justice Project is working to drive change in the criminal justice system. For this project I created an easy-to-use tagging system that allows AJP to add content widgets to the bottom of their web pages. This provides them with the added flexibility in the layout of their website they wanted and gives users easy access to related content. Additionally, two custom filters were built for the Resources and News pages allowing users to quickly find they information they seek.

The exciting challenge for this project was to create three individual sites tied together through the medium of design. A soft color palette, the use of shapes, and interactive testimonials act as the throughline in the Deva Ram, Trilome, and The Cosmic Garden websites. Their Calendly scheduler is embedded on the website making scheduling a breeze.

Black Women Organized for Political Action’s (BWOPA) mission is to activate, motivate, promote, support, and educate African-American women about the political process. BWOPA is a multi-chapter non-profit with a training institute and dedicated PAC. Alison Shuman Media provided a much-needed design update that showcased and seamlessly integrated BWOPA's multi-faceted approach to political organizing, and restructured the backend so that chapter leaders had an easy way of updating and maintaining their individual member rosters. We also gave the training institute and PAC separate and distinct websites, while maintaining a common design thread thought the the three sites.

Aaron Lieberman for Governor
Posted by Alison Shuman · July 14, 2021 6:44 AM
When Arizona State Representative Aaron Lieberman entered the race for governor, he needed a fresh website to introduce himself to a wider Arizonan constituency. The site features a large video loop of Aaron with a quick and easy signup form, a longer video popup in English and Spanish, and a donation ask that blends his two campaign colors of blue and orange into a beautiful gradient that mimics the rising sun over the desert. These types of elements help to subtly underscore the fact that he is an Arizonan through and through. This idea is used again further down the page where four key elements about what makes Aaron the right candidate are laid on top of a stunning photo of Phoenix. A secondary signup was placed in the footer in order to make it as easy as possible for people to sign on and show support for the campaign.

Posted by Alison Shuman · July 03, 2021 3:00 PM
The San Diego Entrepreneurs Exchange (SDEE) is a non-profit run by and for entrepreneurs in the San Diego area whose interests include biotech, pharma, and life sciences. The core of this organization is their members, and as such, the new website puts them at the center. The homepage features a sweeping landscape video of San Diego harbor, various club images, a list of member benefits, and a calendar displaying both SDEE and regional events – all serving to provide a feel for what is it like to be a member of this organization. The updated directory pages feature a clean, organized, card-style layout that makes it extremely easy for members to connect. New membership and sponsorship tables make it clear which benefits you receive from each level. Completing the updated look, was a simple palate change to their logo to softer, more oceanic colors, which were used throughout the site in modern gradients.

Posted by Alison Shuman · July 01, 2021 1:53 PM
The Katal Center, in coordination with several other non-profits and educational institutions, launched the #Less Is More NY campaign to push for parole reform in New York State. This is an action oriented-site with a clear Call to Action in the prime location. As the user scrolls the homepage, the various sections slide into view providing an engaging way to learn more about cause and find ways to get involved. This, in combination with the bold color palette, creates a modern, easy to navigate site that tells a story with maximum impact. The site features both native NationBuilder petition sign-on pages and the more advanced action tool by New Mode for direct communication with lawmakers.

Katal Center for Equity, Health, and Justice
Posted by Alison Shuman · July 01, 2021 1:53 PM
The Katal Center for Health, Equity and Justice is a non-profit that deals largely with ending mass criminalization, mass incarceration, and ending the war on drugs. They came to me wanting a bolder, fresher look for their website. I combined black and white images with a bright color palette, and gave them a simple update to their logo with white text encircled in a rich blue. The circle motif is repeated on various elements throughout the site, creating a cohesive look. They also wanted their site to act as a resource. For this I made the “Issues” front and center, and added related content to every issue page.

Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC (CCCABC)
Posted by Alison Shuman · July 01, 2021 7:11 AM
Creating a site for an organization dealing with children's issues offers a unique set of challenges. Most importantly is figuring out how to create a site that is clearly about children, but not necessarily for children - in other words, how to make it fun and approachable and yet educational and informative. On the homepage, I coupled a bright color palette with black-and-white images. The use of black-and-white provides a slightly more serious tone and helps to offset the bright accent colors, providing a more balanced overall look. The color blocking is repeated on the news and membership pages to provide cohesion throughout the site.

American Justice Project Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · June 29, 2021 11:44 AM
American Justice Project is a newly-formed non-profit aimed at bringing greater accountability and reform to Connecticut state and local governments and seeking justice for those who have been harmed by the system. The will serve as a vast resource hub and action center with the tagline: "Justice in the palm of your hands". In the design brief, it was noted that they want their initialism AJP to be the key to their name and brand. They also liked the idea of a torch or eternal flame for justice. Combining these ideas, I hand-drew the letters AJP in the form of a red-hot flame, giving it a fiery red to orange gradient. This gradient is then repeated in the word JUSTICE.

Ocean Connect Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · June 28, 2021 7:54 PM
Ocean Connect's mission is to inspire students from underrepresented backgrounds to find careers connected with the ocean. For this logo, I wanted to focus on the idea of connection. I turned the O in Ocean and the C in Connect into interlocking rings. To align it with the ocean theme, I used a gradient of blues as the color palette and transformed the C in Connect into a wave. Given that their demographic is high schoolers, I paired the graphic with a futuristic, almost game-like font-type.

Four Freedoms Democratic Club Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · June 27, 2021 6:15 AM
The Four Freedoms Democratic Club wanted a fresh look for their club logo to attract the younger demographic rapidly moving into their Upper East Side neighborhood in New York City. To achieve this, I used a custom graphic font built on concentric circles. The circle motif is repeated in the two lines encircling the the FFDC initials. I used blue to underscore their connection to the Democratic party, but paired one more modern bright and bold hue with a more serious, darker shade.

Downtown Independent Democrats Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · June 23, 2021 6:20 AM
The Downtown Independent Democrats is a self-described club of independently thinking Democrats in lower Manhattan. They came to me wanting a logo that emphasized these three words: Downtown, Independent, and Democrat. I created a graphical representation of the quintessential downtown New York skyline, superimposing it on the three letters of their acronym: DID. Placing the Statue of Liberty in the center "I" sets this letter apart and underscores the idea that they are independent thinkers.

Hempstead Now! Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · June 15, 2021 6:21 AM
Hempstead Now! is a start-up political party focusing on the community of Hempstead, New York. The most prominent feature of this logo is the large exclamation point that arches over the words Hempstead Now. The idea was to not only use the exclamation point that is in their name in a bold, graphical way, but to also create this idea of a sun or horizon – a new dawn over the village of Hempstead. The use of NOW in a bold, italic font imbues the word with a sense of immediacy and a sense of looking to the future. Shades of blue were used to show the affiliation with the Democratic party.

Bayou City Waterkeeper Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · June 07, 2021 6:22 AM
The Bayou City Waterkeeper is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the Houston area watershed in Texas. This logo is based on the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Earth is represented by the ring of green, which was created from an image of a local rice plant that grows in the region; Air is represented by the egret, a common bird in the area; The egret is silhouetted by the large sun in the center representing the fire aspect; Lastly, the ring of blue is the watershed itself. The circle motif was used to represent the cycles of life in this richly diverse region of the States.

Dawn for New York Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · June 02, 2021 6:24 AM
When Dawn Smalls decided to run for Public Advocate in New York City, she wanted a logo to reflect her campaign promise to be a spokesperson for all five of the city's diverse boroughs. I used the iconic New York skyline with the equally iconic Brooklyn Bridge superimposed. The bridge was used to symbolize that uniting of the city's boroughs. I used dark blue as the main color to signify her Democratic political leaning, but also to represent the night sky. The golden gradient was used as a play on her name and to symbolize the dawn of a new day for New York City.

Creative Shifts Logo
Posted by Alison Shuman · May 31, 2021 6:25 AM
This logo was created for a life coach who focuses on harnessing the power of creativity to help people overcome obstacles in their life. The use of a Fibonacci spiral inherently represents ideas of artistry, beauty, and creativity. Additionally, as the birds move along this spiral, they grow larger and larger and eventually break free, evoking feelings of freedom, release, and accomplishment. A warm color palette was chosen to represent the internal fire in all of us.
