Turning NationBuilder Actions Into Deeper Engagement

August 19, 2026

Someone signs up for your newsletter. Great. Now what?

Too often, that's where the interaction ends. Someone signs a petition, RSVPs for an event, joins as a member, or subscribes to a newsletter, and then simply becomes another person sitting in the database.

But every action someone takes on your website is an opportunity to deepen that relationship. A petition signer can become a newsletter subscriber. A subscriber can attend an event. An event attendee can become a donor, volunteer, member, or activist.

NationBuilder provides myriad ways to help move people along this ladder of engagement. The key is making sure you're actually using them.

What happens immediately after someone takes an action?

The first opportunities come immediately after someone submits a form.

When someone completes an action on your NationBuilder site, you can control where they go next. Instead of simply refreshing to a generic thank-you page, think about the logical next step.

If someone has just subscribed to your newsletter, perhaps you send them to your volunteer opportunities. Someone who signs a petition might be directed to an upcoming event. Someone who has just become a member might be introduced to other ways to get involved.

The next page shouldn't be arbitrary. Ask yourself: Now that this person has taken this action, what would I ideally like them to do next?

Don't waste the 'Thank You' message

NationBuilder also displays a message thanking someone for taking an action. That's another opportunity to continue the conversation.

Tailor the message to the action they just took. You can encourage them to take another action, tell them what to expect next, or ask them to spread the word to their own community.

They've just demonstrated that they're interested enough in your organization to do something. That's a valuable moment to engage them further.

Check your autoresponse emails

NationBuilder sends an autoresponse email after someone takes an action. Make sure you know what those emails actually say.

A generic "Thanks for signing up" does very little to deepen the relationship. The email should acknowledge what the person just did and, where appropriate, provide a clear next step.

Use automation to continue the relationship

Not every next step needs to happen immediately.

NationBuilder Workflows can trigger a series of automated communications based on actions people take.

Say someone becomes a member. They might immediately receive an email thanking them for joining. A few days later, they could receive an email highlighting upcoming events or recent news. A week later, they might receive an invitation to volunteer or support a particular campaign.

Instead of relying on someone on your team to remember every follow-up, you can build a sequence that ensures new supporters continue hearing from you.

But automation shouldn't be your only strategy.

Put a human face on your follow-up

Some relationships need more than an automated email sequence.

NationBuilder Paths allow you to create a structured series of steps for moving supporters toward a particular goal, such as becoming a donor, volunteer, member, or event attendee.

Unlike an automated email sequence, a Path can help your team manage the human side of supporter engagement. You can define the steps someone should move through, assign a point person responsible for following up, set deadlines, and track where each person is in the process.

For example, someone who has demonstrated an interest in your organization might be placed on a donor Path. One step could be for a staff member to send a personal email asking them to contribute. Your team can then track whether that outreach happened, whether the person responded, and what should happen next. The point person can log each interaction, whether it's an email or phone call, and add important notes about the contact. Paths create accountability. Instead of someone signing a petition, expressing interest, or attending an event and then disappearing into your database, your team has a defined next action for deepening that person's involvement.

Think beyond the signup

The goal isn't to push everyone immediately toward a donation or volunteer commitment. It's to recognize that supporter engagement is a relationship that develops over time.
Someone who signs a petition today may simply want to receive your newsletter next. Someone who's been reading that newsletter for six months may be ready to attend an event. An event attendee may eventually become one of your most active volunteers.

NationBuilder gives you the tools to build those journeys, from what someone sees immediately after taking an action to automated communications and personal follow-up.
The important part is having a plan. For every action someone takes on your website, ask: What should happen next?
