Custom Site Design
BWOPA was founded in the 1960s during the height of the civil rights movement and continues to thrive as a powerful, active organization today. I wanted the homepage to reflect that story—to honor BWOPA’s deep historical roots while highlighting its ongoing impact. To achieve this, I used a looping video clip with images from the 1960s civil rights movement as the hero background. When visitors click the play button, a full video appears, offering a five-minute journey through BWOPA’s history.
The "Homepage" Tag
To balance history with present-day impact, I set up the homepage so that BWOPA’s latest activities appear directly below the background video. This way, visitors first experience the organization’s powerful roots in the civil rights movement and then immediately see the vibrant, ongoing work BWOPA is leading today. It creates a seamless story that honors the past while showcasing the organization’s continued relevance.
For this, I took advantage of NationBuilder's built-in feature that displays snippets from any page tagged “homepage”. This makes it easy for BWOPA to keep the site fresh. The tag can be added to any page-type – basic, blog post, petition, donation, etc.
Easy Chapter Setup
As a chapter-based organization with dispersed leadership, BWOPA required both public-facing and backend solutions. On the frontend, each chapter has its own informational page featuring meeting times, announcements, a donation page for membership dues, an event calendar, and a members-only section. On the backend, BWOPA leverages NationBuilder’s membership tools to create distinct membership types for each chapter — keeping financials organized and separate. Members have access to a secure portal where they can manage their accounts, such as updating payment details, while each chapter designates a point person to receive notifications and oversee chapter-specific activity.
Video Library
To showcase BWOPA’s video content, I created an easy-to-update video library page. Adding a new video is as simple as creating a subpage and embedding the YouTube or Vimeo link—making the library effortless to maintain and expand.
