Playful Design for Playful Pups...and Cats, and Hamsters, and Raccoons
It was easy to be inspired by images of adorable animals. LHS' bright color palette and adorable animal photos lent itself naturally to this playful design.
Mega Menu
It’s best practice to limit your top navigation to a maximum of six items to avoid overwhelming users. However, some organizations offer such a wide range of services that a larger menu is necessary to help visitors quickly find what they need. For Liberty Humane Society, I created this setup: a streamlined top navigation paired with a mega menu hover, allowing users to see all options at a glance.
Important Information Upfront
The Liberty Humane Society website contains a wide range of essential public resources, from wildlife management services and animal cruelty reporting to pet adoptions and vaccination clinic information. With so much critical content, important details risk being overlooked. To address this, I designed a dedicated section just below the header to highlight key phone numbers and contact information. Additionally, I incorporated visual quick links to related topics, making it easier for visitors to navigate and access the information they need.
Give Butter
While I recommend using NationBuilder’s built-in payment processor, some organizations prefer to maintain their existing systems when transitioning to NationBuilder. For example, Liberty Humane Society chose to continue using GiveButter for donations, so I simply embedded a homepage widget that connected their donation form to their account. I’ve also integrated Bloomerang in a similar way. In other cases, I’ve done the reverse — setting up systems for organizations that rely on NationBuilder for their backend while keeping their public-facing website on WordPress.
