We The Free

We The Free is an global vegan activist organization. Their mission is to educate people on horrific animal abuse in the meat and dairy industries and showcase veganism as a more humane alternative. They approached me to move their site from Squarespace to NationBuilder, while adding additional features and functionality.

Pixel for Pixel

Pixel for Pixel

I’m often asked, “Can you do [insert design element here] in NationBuilder?” The answer is always a resounding yes. There’s virtually no limit to what we can build. If you’ve seen it on WordPress or Squarespace, I can recreate it in NationBuilder—pixel for pixel.

Easy Page Building

Easy Page Building

Coming from Squarespace, WTF was accustomed to the drag-and-drop page-building style. With NationBuilder, this is accomplished with page tags and content separators. Over the years, I've developed and honed a system that clients really love for its ease of use and flexibility. At the core is an intuitive tagging system that makes organizing and customizing content effortless. This streamlined approach allows users to build and manage pages quickly, without needing technical expertise.

100s of Chapters

100s of Chapters

With hundreds of chapters worldwide, presenting them clearly is no small task. Our solution? A sleek, intuitive system that puts every chapter just a couple of clicks away. Start by browsing all chapters in your region. Click on one, and instantly see everything you need: a link to join, upcoming events, and direct access to their social channels. And as new chapters launch, adding them is effortless. The We The Free team simply creates a new Organization profile, fills in a few key details, adds a couple of tags, and the system takes care of the rest — even assigning the correct flag automatically. Fast. Simple. Scalable.

Donation Matching

Donation Matching

Fundraising is the lifeblood of many non-profits, and nothing inspires donors more than knowing their gift will go two or even three times as far. WTF needed a clear, visual way to show this, plus a solution simple enough to roll out across hundreds of simultaneous fundraisers. Now with a single tag added to any donation page, it gets instantly transforms into a “doubler” or “tripler,” complete with a striking tri-color progress bar that makes it clear every gift is being matched.

User Profiles, Gamified

User Profiles, Gamified

Leveraging NationBuilder’s built-in social capital system, We The Free wanted volunteers to see exactly how their contributions stack up. Every action—RSVPing to an event, organizing one, making a donation—earns social capital points, which add up over time. For WTF, we created sleek, easy-to-navigate public profiles where volunteers can instantly see their rank, basic info, and point history. At a glance, they know where they stand—and are motivated to take more actions to boost their score.

Advanced Job Search

Advanced Job Search

Have vacancies to fill? For WTF I implemented a job filter and a search bar, making it easier for people to find jobs in their area. With the 123FormBuilder integration, people can apply directly without leaving the WTF website. Information collected on the form is directly synched with NationBuilder and admin receives instant notification of the application.

123FormBuilder is the third-party app I use most due to their advanced feature set, total customization, and integration with your NationBuilder database.

A Blog Stacked with Features

A Blog Stacked with Features

The WTF blog includes a featured blog post, 30-second summary (also known as tldr;), topic filter and search bar, further reading dynamically suggested by topic, blog post navigation, and author bio with link to author page.

Working with Alison Shuman from Alison Shuman Media was an excellent experience. She supported us in bringing our existing site into the NationBuilder platform and helped us think through exciting and creative ways to use its tools to grow our community. With her guidance we were able to set up features that allow us to recruit volunteers, receive donations, launch events, run campaigns, and more.

One of the most valuable aspects of working with Alison was her deep knowledge of the NationBuilder platform and her creative approach to problem solving. NationBuilder has its limitations, and Alison helped us find smart and effective ways to work within those while still creating something that felt dynamic and tailored to our needs.
